This latest in Totally Killing It's Dub obsession offers 10 new tracks and a remix of Long Road Home from the first Dubs Inna Midnight Sun.
The remix and three new tracks feature Finnish troubadour and Reggae singer Joonas Hauveli. Joonas recently released a well received classic Reggae album, has an upcoming new record, and, is constantly touring the length of Finland.
The track Sunny Day Dub features vocalist Sanna Jäämuru and musician Jouko Hiltunen. Sanna is an in demand vocal powerhouse whose live performances are known for her soulful sound and Janis like intensity. Jouko is an original member of prototype Finnish Punk Band Jalla Jalla and currently playing guitar, bass and banjo in different bands across Lapland.
Sanna and Jouko represent here as members of Lapland Bluegrass Punk Rockabilly band Lappi Grass with an upcoming EP.
Totally Killing It’s appreciation for Dub originated in large part with The Clash’s Black Market EP, but, fully developed when we started recording engineering. Particularly when working at Compass Point Recording Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. Sessions with Wailers Tyrone Downey and Jr. Murvan were key influences with their kind Reggae pith instructions and encouragement. Sessions with Judy Mowat, Marcia Griffiths, engineer Steven Stanley and many other original Reggae artists further stoked our love of and, appreciation for, the sound. When ambient Dub rode a wave of popularity as Rave culture spread worldwide, we released the Sub Dub project with Raz Mesinai. Called the US’s answer to The Orb, Sub Dub self released two iconic EPs through Totally Killing It Productions, two full length albums and many remixes including a Burning Spear Slavery Days Dub for Island Records all between about 1992 and 1996. Intended to call awareness to the original Dub masters as well as break new ground, Sub Dub had wide ranging influence. Vision Quest was a key track in New York tribal house music while the band was also instrumental to New York’s illbient scene. They toured Europe playing raves and the US west coast with The Invisible Scratch Pickels and were known for their live Dub mixing with a bass heavy sound prescient of Dub Step.
Currently chilling in northern Finland with a new studio, Totally Killing It no longer is New York based working with major artists in studios there, and, thankfully, can focus on underground studio sonic exploration and river surfing.
This new release in the Dubs Inna Midnight Sun series further develops and expands the direction of the first record. Trying to keep with Jamaican Dub traditions, vocals and instruments are recorded live in the studio over a beat. We diverge from classic Dub by utilizing modern digital production but also attempt to maintain the warm organic spontaneity of the original sound.
The tracks on this record range from Digital Reggae to Dub Techno but mainly are contemporary interpretations of the studio wizardry of Dub.
