about

Loops Of Various Lengths continues Totally Killing Its blazing "eventually we'll get around to it" release schedule with this homage to tape loop experiments started in about 1978 using two Teac 4 track tape decks in the Frippertronics configuration. This modern attempt to replicate that original sound was recorded in Lapland this winter.

In contrast to the midnight sun dubs of summer, this project captures winter season in the north. Tape loops have a timeless quality in that a well constructed one can hold your attention for a few or for dozens and dozens of repetitions. Winter here has that same timeless feeling. Hours fade to days. The expanse of white stretches pristine to the horizon fading into hazy darkness and flat light interrupted only by flashes of blue sky and the sun traveling in a low arc across the horizon. The aura at night can light the sky with blue and green and colors in between. Everything feels tranquil which belies the demands of survival in the arctic. Like the constantly evolving windswept snowy landscape, tape loops form and disintegrate according to a transitory balance of record head current and tapes magnetic flux. The recorded sound fades into tape hiss with successive loop cycles like the wind blows and shapes drifting snow.

These tracks take the listener to that arctic winter place. To a cozy cabin with an expansive view. The tracks are mostly ambient but there are beats, techno and dub techno loops too.

The album also is made to work as a DJ tool in that the ambient tracks are designed to mix and layer together. The tracks with beats transition to ambient and, in conjunction with the other ambient tracks, can be elements to work sonic journeys and dimension into a set.
