about

This second record by Stunk and Droned finds them path finding in the same sonic landscape as the first.
Loft jam we call it.
The sound, to a large part, comes from time spent creating music in Derek’s loft when we were first in thriving downtown Manhattan. Hiphop music and culture were growing like a wildfire a few blocks north at Roxy on Friday and Funhouse on Saturday. Planet Rock did indeed end up making the planet rock. As everybody who was there in the club well expected. The Knitting Factory up on Houston and CBGBs over on the Bowery were also making waves that would echo world wide. Keith Herring was doing murals in subway stations across Canal Street on an almost nightly basis. The Mud Club, Puffy’s and the Ear Inn were a short walk from the loft where we’d always seem to end up, jamming day and night. Inspired by everything around us and freed of any expectations whatsoever.

In the studio, creating the music in the DAW these days, kind of like the sound itself, becomes a collage of techniques and approaches. The beats are programmed but the instruments and vocals are recorded live and spontaneously like jazz improvasition. In the mix happen stance sonic elements, sound design and samples are all employed.

This loft jam sound envelopes, it's asymmetric, rich and dense. And it oscillates at the resonant frequency of creativity, like downtown Manhattan at its zenith.
It travels in dark and light, back alley’s and main streets.
And, like the city there’s a warm beating heart under all the noise and distraction.

Recorded in Lynch Art Studios San Francisco and at TotaIly Killing It in Finnish Lapland.
